Leather Steering Wheel maintenance.
I have searched for this answer, found some things for a perforated "M" wheel but not really answered my question.
Question. How can I keep my steering wheel clean and nice without the leather deteriorating due to skin oils over time? I know if I always wore sheepshide gloves it would be a non-issue. But living in the real world what are some good options? A leather cleaner/conditioner seems like a good start but I have little experience here and not liked what I've tried so far. Effectively mothers and the like. Stuff available at the local auto parts store. Thoughts? |

Whenever I drive my 2015 Challenger, I am diligent to wash my hands before I get in to drive it. Keeps the steering wheel leather cleaner longer. Never used any type of cleaner/conditioner so I can’t help with that.

Ive found that paying no attention to it has the same result as fawning over it.
One time someone cleaned my steering wheel with alcohol which totally dry peeled it. . . Otherwise just wipe over with leather care when youre conditioning seats etc, nothing super fancy. Only had 1 steering wheel ever show wear and it was the one that got alcoholic. Generally keep my cars 90k miles, have only had one until 120k. 8 cars. |

Maybe the oils from our skin keeps them like new? I've never had a problem with a leather steering wheel not looking like new over the years.

Yeah I think the oils are mostly good. If you wear rings or rest your wrist on the wheel with a watch or jewelry, eventually you're gonna scratch or abrade it. Otherwise let the oils oil! I own a skincare research lab by the way which should add 3.25% more value to my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to have ghosted everyone but I was on a very demanding job last week and had zero time to look at this.
So for the clean hands comments. That would be great but my screen name ought to give some hint of my problem. Also I am not a car swapping person for the most part. Tend to keep them 10+ years. My old truck has 285k on it. Had it 18 years so far. I am not allowed to wear white. Dirt flocks to me. No idea why. I do spend much of my time running a skidsteer and excavator but I am sure that has nothing , like literally zero, to do with it. Not sure why my new truck steering wheel gets dirty either. (Sarcasm if you missed it) I typically just use a damp microfiber to get the built up crud off the steering wheel and it cleans it nicely, I just feel that over time it will degrade the leather. I will try the colourlock product. Thanks for the feedback. |
