That’s insane, I did change my coolant tank about 35k miles, I have 52k now and I always keep an eye on it for leaks, I haven’t had any major coolant top offs but I did have to top it off a little a few days ago, everything seemed fine I thought it was normal since it’s winter I warm it up more so usually that’s normal, my brother took it for a spin, was taking a turn and it just shuts off, then try’s to start it and it just made a clicking sounds and smoke comes up seems like burns out the starter, I towed her to my shop and start taking it apart, thinking it’s just the starter, but then try to manually spin the engine in it didn’t go either way, not even a smudge, Drained the oil and it was clean, expansion tank doesn’t seem to be leaking either, is it possible it has some kind of electronic lock? My car is stock and just doesnnt seem right that it can just seize like that, if that is the case that’s literally total BS, BMW should be replacing it considering it has a recall that is caused by it if that’s the case. The amount of money we pay for these cars and this is what we are left with is just horrible. My next move is to start taking apart the top to looks deeper onto the injectors and plugs. I’ll stay in touch but it sounds just like everyone else’s issues.

Sorry to hear about your pain. Please keep us informed with how you get on.

Fingers crossed it is something simple 🤞🤞

Engine Replacement Breakdown

I briefly gave my experience on this matter in another thread on this forum and promised to upload the write-up/cost breakdown of the engine replacement and this seems like the best thread to do it in.

I'm truly sorry for all who are experiencing this issue with this amazing car. Like many of you, my engine was damaged due to the leaking coolant from the faulty tank that BMW just started to address back in April of this year. My guess is they only did so due to the repeated repairs needed to these cars that were both in warranty and out of warranty gathered by analytics and causes for cars coming in for service.

I would definitely take the bulletin that BMW posted regarding the recall and couple that with the recent letter many of us received regarding the injector coverage for 15yrs/150,000 miles and take it to a competent lawyer for anyone who is experiencing engine failure due to BMW's design flaw for the coolant tank if you don't have warranty coverage. They are all but admitting it's their fault with that latest service letter.

Attached are the pictures from my invoice for engine replacement. I was fortunate enough to buy my car from a dealer that included a "Lifetime" Engine, Drivetrain, and Transmission warranty. I added an additional 3yr/36,000-mile coverage for all additional components (electrical, fuel delivery, etc.) and they used that to cover the engine replacement instead of footing the bill.

Just happened to me over the weekend. Shop confirmed that the engine is seized, and I had the same exact symptoms everyone is describing here (car shifted to neutral, wouldn't start, smoke from starter). No sounds out of the ordinary, just a feint smell of burnt plastic.

Car is out of warranty, but I did have the car serviced in 2023 when I had warranty and they said it was a faulty injector. Recall work has not been done yet as I only received the letter a couple weeks ago. What now?

Sorry to hear this happened to you all.

I'm visiting from the X5M forum as I've spun rod bearings and seized the S63 in my F85.

Don't think we can blame the coolant reservoir for my car - but there's an obvious design flaw with the S63 resulting in a heap of failures, usually outside of warranty.

Heap of failures? Are these posted on the F85 forums?

There are basically a number of S63 engine failure posts on every forum. But yeah, there's a few of us that have posted in the F85 section over the last few years.
My car is stock, serviced above and beyond what BMW require with quality oil and seized in essentially normal daily driving. 87k KMs.

Have you had any luck on this update?

Did anyone have their rod bearings changed? I have had around 5-6 F90's between 70-100k km in the shop for a rod bearing change and almost all of them showed signs of wear and it was a good time for them to be replaced.

This is the first time I have read of people doing preventative maintenance rod bearing changes on the F90 M5. Tell us more about what you have seen.

I changed rod bearings on my E90 M3 at 60k miles or about 100k km as preventative maintenance, but the S65 and S85 are known to have rod bearing problems. I am over 100k km in my F90 M5 and have not thought about changing rod bearings.
