The more I see of it, the worse it looks. There's no finesse, no finely sculpted lines. Did they literally design it with play-doh?
BMW seem to be transitioning into more of an IT/technology company than car maker. Lame |

Totally agree, the F90 is such a fluid design the G90 pales in comparison. Unfortunately the M5 design team can only do so much with what the regular 5-series designers gave them to work with.
At the heart of it, what's frustrating is that over the years the ///M division has been turned into a marketing whore for BMW to sell more cars / up-sell base cars with the "M" treatment. The prostitution of the brand has been disappointing, but for ///M to sell out its core values/mission on one of its two consistently produced "pure M" cars is the final capitulation of the division. I understand electrification is the future, but the bloated G90 is an insult to the M5 legacy. You'd think they would have learned with the flop of the XM that has under performed BMW's expectations. Sadly they didn't.

But as for this new leviathan--no chance. As others have said, it dynamically can't compete and it's ultimately a victim of regulations (noise mandates as well as emissions). It's too bulky to be fun on the vast majority of interesting backroads in the UK. Whereas the F90 is a lithe beast of a machine in every way, surpassing anything in its class (unless you want the muscle car aesthetic of an E63). Even with the OPF, mine still sounds pretty rorty (though a AWE axel-back would allow it to release more chorus, I bet!). Given the combination of design angularity, emissions constraints, exhaust-strangling EU regs, and escalating weight, I too would be inclined to look back at, say, 2015-19 cars for a dream garage line up. As it stands, I'll be running my F90 Comp for as many years as I can. It will only be more coveted in a decade's time, when most folk will be wafting around in monochrome four-wheel fridges. Maybe a small EV will cover daily urban chores in the future; but I'll know where the keys are for the source of real (and timeless) enjoyment.

I was at the pre launch first preview here at BMW AUS a few months ago. Didn’t quite like it. Lacked the finesse and quality of prior M5s and the interior was sub par IMO. I had to lie that it looks good to be invited the next event! Ha.

So another interesting twist in the enigma that is the G90 M5. Earlier this week I was speaking to my CA and I informed him that after 7 M5 leases in a row the streak was coming to an end and that I would be buying my F90 and not leasing the G90. Along with an exterior design that really does nothing for me, I explained the key reason was the G90 M5 is the first M5 to take a step backward in performance from the previous generation. BMW went with a bloated hybrid drive system from which the only benefit is 25 miles of electric only range. REALLY?!? That's what M5 buyers are yearning for?!? At least they could have given the electric motor enough HP to bring the 0-60 time down from the F90, but alas they didn't. What's interesting is he didn't even try to sell through my complaints and try to persuade me into a G90. He simply said "I understand", and went on to say he's been asking lots of people around BMW the rationale for the G90 and nobody has a good answer. Very interesting marketing tactic for BMW NA - release it's flagship M vehicle with a completely new drive train and do nothing to prep it's sales force to sell it?!?
Which got me thinking - what could have driven this decision by BMW? I'm sure BMW sank millions of dollars into the design of the hybrid drive system, only to see the XM flop so it didn't pay for that investment. Question to ponder - Did the accountant bean-counters win out over the ///M design team, and did BMW put the hybrid system into a successful platform simply to try to recoup more of it's design cost? I can't for the life of me think of another reason why the G90 makes sense. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/10/18/vw-b...w%20volkswagen

I don't understand the reasoning for why it looks they way it does. No side vents on an M5?
Still secretly hoping it wow's me when I see it in person, but at the moment I am looking to get a nice used F90 instead of waiting as I initially planned. |

I’m looking at an RS6 Avant or M8 GC at this point. Also throwing the Taycan ST, Macan turbo electric, and G80 in the mix.
Not planning to touch the G90…

Next year will be last for M8, so a good idea to grab one to have the F9x chassis before they stuff hybrid into a next generation of 6/8-series

Considering what has been done to the X3, 5 Series, and such... I have no faith in a good looking, nice performing 8 series replacement.
Knowing BMW they might just discontinue the entire series again altogether lol |

I think the new G90 not will be as popular in the long run and will depreciate like crazy just think about the hybrid battery getting worse and worse losing performance with time and then completely fail very costly.
And i think the F90 will hold it value pretty good and may become a future classic as it has good power and Awd and still is lighter than the F10. Steve Dinan said the same thing on The Smoking Tire podcast. Last edited by Holset; 11-06-2024 at 01:11 PM.. |

We knew this was coming, between US and German mandates (Germany being the worst offender), we get bloated cars with complicated drivetrain tech. No way I would own this out of warranty.
The design is not great at all. I am glad BMW fired the head designer, hopefully in the next round of cars we'll see some positive change. For six figures, this doesn't make me excited or happy at all. I got a M5CS for this very reason, unfortunately. Change is not always bad, but this is not good, either.

Something I had not considered was that many European center cities are banning ICE engines entirely. While I assumed we were just moving towards better MPGs with these hybrids, another benefit is that you can put these cars in electric only mode and still be able to travel into these Euro cities and meet their regulations.
I don't think the small EV motor is 1000lbs, so not sure why the weight had to go up so much... |
