I received the recall notice from BMW also. I have a 2022 M5 with 14K miles. Never had a leak. I inspect it regularly. I was at the dealership back in March. They changed my oil and plugs. I would think if my tank was leaking the tech would have seen something when changing the plugs.
Not sure if I want to mess with it just yet. My next scheduled service is in March 2025. At that point they will probably do it, and I won't have a choice. |

Has anyone had success in getting reimbursed for prior repairs? My coolant tank leaked back in ~March and I had to have it replaced. I was having some engine issues post replacement and ended up replacing my spark plugs, ignition coils and 2 fuel injectors and my local dealer is telling me that the coolant tank is an emissions recall and therefore they don't have to reimburse me.

I received my recall letter last week and I'm just writing to BMW USA for exactly that. I not only replaced 4 x injectors and 1 x tank... but also had to have a complete engine rebuild due to faulty injector (due to coolant) causing cylinder 7 to run lean and fail leakdown. Needless to say I installed an RK Alloy tank as part of the engine rebuild. I'm hoping to at least get the cost of the injectors and tank refunded. I also still have the faulty injectors! Shall let you know how this goes!! |

Question for those that have had the recall completed - do you notice a faint coolant smell either with the windows down or when opening the hood? My new tank has zero indication of leaking coolant, but I continue to have a faint coolant smell. Only explanation I have is it is from coolant vapor heated by the nearby exhaust pipes?

Just got my oil service along with spark plugs changed per scheduled maintenance and my advisor said my VIN shows the recall attached to it and changed the coolant tank out as well. New part is 889-450 so I guess it's the same part others said didn't offer a permanent fix. I did notice a faint coolant smell when I opened the hood when I got home. Fingers crossed, let's see. Never had a leak before with the old coolant tank in 3 years I had the car.

It is pretty hard to change the tank without spilling a drop. Coolant has a higher burn off temp than water so it takes longer for the drop to burn off. Certainly check for leaks — look for white residue and sniff around, but it is probably just that spilled drop if the tank was just replaced.

Had mine replaced about two weeks ago. They also replaced two injectors at the same time. I didn't have any problems before the recall repair and haven't noticed anything after. No odd smells or anything on my side.

I'm convinced my 3/2023 build car is leaking at the cap. My tank is of course the new part number that people who get the letter are getting.
The level is again a bit lower, and there is a little bit of white crust inside the cap area on the tank. The rest of the outside of the tank is spotless. I ordered a new cap. I know warranty should cover it, but the hassle of driving to the dealer isn't worth saving the $20. If I still notice a cap leak with the new cap, then I'll complain. |

The only time the system should release pressure is if the cooling system gets beyond its design point. In normal use that should never happen. It didn't even happen at Thermal on the track in the summer at 115 degrees. The year-old cars would go in to limp mode if you didn't short shift because the oil would get too hot, but not the coolant. And that only happened because the old cars had all their cooling fins knocked flat from dust and tiny rocks.
If your car is loosing coolant there is a problem (overfilled, tank issue, head gasket, etc.) I did have an old car (Aurora 4.0) that would overheat in idle traffic. Turns out the cap was leaking so the systems would not hold pressure which caused the coolant to boil. I replaced the cap and 2 days later the plastic radiator failed (probably weak but since system wasn't holding pressure with the bad cap it didn't break before). But after that it was solid for 60k more miles. It had the limp mode where it could run on 4 cylinders without coolant. |

Any update on reimbursement? (Replaced tank/plugs and fuel injectors out of my own pocket as well) I called BMW Corporate today and they said pretty much to reach out to BMW dealer to sort it out. They also mentioned that it might fall under the, “The Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act”. If anyone else has had luck with any reimbursement please let me know! |

Seems strange this would be left up to the dealership. I imagine the cost would flow back to BMW NA. Sounds like a wild goose chase.

Mine is being updated today. But inspection has also identified corrosion on ignition wiring. As such this has been referred back to head office. So my car (f90) remains in the workshop since Monday 7th.

So... after speaking with BMW customer relations a little while ago, I did as instructed and visited a local Houston BMW Dealership regarding being refunded the cost of the 4 injectors and coolant tank that were replaced back in March... due to the leaking OEM tank. Never mind the cost of getting the engine rebuilt. Service manager was helpful enough and asked if I could provide him with a copy of the invoices showing the BMW part numbers of the injectors and tank. No problem. Emailed across at around midday on Friday. Even have the 4 injectors that were replaced that are covered in dry coolant if needed. Surprisingly, received a call a few hours later from the service manager stating that BMW HQ had replied already, even he was surprised, and essentially as this an "Emissions Recall" I cannot claim for parts replaced prior to the recall being issued. If it was a safety recall then I could. He went further to say that if I had waited to fix the car once the recall came out the parts would have been replaced for free! I proceeded to remind him that my car was literally in the shop getting it's engine rebuilt when the recall came out!!! How was I supposed to know that BMW were going to the right thing and issue a recall for the exact reason that f$%ked my engine. Not a happy chap! Last edited by Oz M5; 10-22-2024 at 01:30 PM.. |

Appointment set in two weeks for replacement.
I had the prior tank replaced at an independent mechanic about 6 months ago, which I believe was before the new tanks were in stock - need to check on the part number. No signs of leaks at current time. |

The new tanks have been around for over a year. BMW may replace it to earn the warranty work or may actually check the PN on the bottom of the tank and tell you that you already have the new tank.
