Whatever cap must be vented. If pressures are too high in the tank, coolant may vent along with the excess pressure air. That is why the tank is called an expansion tank. Maybe your theory of the tank problem is not pressure related? Some think it’s a chemical reaction.

Now I have the Level CCP and I hope it works as intended. BMW should have used the spare space on the opposite side of the brake pump. 😤 |

I just ordered a new expansion tank plus the shield from ECS. Does anyone have any experience with their "life time" warranty? Like if the new tank leaks again will they replace it?

I was told they are not allowed to sell new or used vehicles with the ex tank issue until they either create an extended warranty for the part or do a recall.

Finally. My 2019 had one replaced and needed another when I was trading it in. My 2022 has one done already and now needs another after 2K miles on it. It's not a big deal but annoying and surprised it's taken them this long. Especially, considering the fact if it leaks long enough it damages the spark plug below and coil pack

The way I read the notice goes further — dealers can’t sell the parts involved either — they have to keep them to use for the servicing.

Curious for folks’ input - 2019 M5 base with 42k miles. Car is currently at the dealer awaiting fuel injectors. Original owner and love the car minus this expansion tank issue. It was replaced 9 months ago and now I watch it closely. About 3 months ago I noticed coolant around the cap, which the dealer replaced and assured me the tank itself wasn’t leaking. Yesterday I got the dreaded drivetrain malfunction and car is running terribly, so immediately brought it in. There are faults on the bank 2 fuel injectors which are going to be replaced under warranty. They’re on order so the dealer sent me on my way with a loaner. I’m a little worried they’re only going to replace the injectors and are not going to look at the tank again or other affected parts. Are they missing the forest for the trees, or would you be confident they’re going to tie the replaced parts together and look at the issue holistically? I’d rather they hold onto it and fix the issue vs heading back in a few months for the same issue.

Both the tank and the cap have been replaced in the last 9 months. I'm not sure if either are currently leaking but will report back when I get more detail. So far they've only told me the injectors on bank 2 (coolant tank side) have faults and need to be replaced.

On my 2022, they replaced the tank and cap only the first time around. Then about two weeks later I had my first ever drivetrain malfunction with a misfire code. They replaced the plugs and coil under the area where the coolant tank had leaked and it took care of the problem. They should've known to look at that area as many have had issues with the coil packs, plugs, etc. near the coolant tank (if leaking). |

So do the plugs need changing because the coils are damaged by the coolant leak resulting in incorrect ignition which results in plugs fouled to the extent they need to be replaced? I have to say these high performance cars are extremely delicate compared to simple in-line four cylinder engines I have dealt with most of my driving years.

Yes, twin turbo direct injection V8s with the turbos and cats in the Vee and water to air intercoolers and multiple heat exchangers are complex. It is sort of scary to me at times when I start taking my F90 apart. But the performance is astounding.

It really is amazing it works at all and seems fairly reliable The variable lift is interesting since it means no throttle plate. But now you have 8 actuators to control the value lift. But this is how you get a flat 550lb-ft across most of the range, and 600+ hp. This is the smallest V8 I've owned, but also the highest output and best fuel economy (not that we care about that with this type of car). But it still is impressive. Some people lament the loss of the 60's muscle cars, I don't. Engines now produce more power, run smoother, actually start when it's really cold out, and idle better. Too bad we are about to throw all this progress away. |

I thought there were throttle bodies under the intercoolers? No plates in them? I can’t remember for sure from when I changed the ICs but think there were plates.

The technical guide for the S63TU touts how you don't need a throttle with VANOS and valvatronic. There is a throttle plate as part of the crankcase ventilation but that's not in the intake path (but does come off of the turbo). So yay German engineering...more complexity in the engine.
