Avoid ATE Typ 200 brake fluid - causes squeaky pedal
I'm sharing this hoping it saves someone from unnecessary costs and time fixing a squeaky brake pedal caused by the master cylinder. The bottom line is that ATE Typ 200 is not low viscocity fluid and for some reason it causes our master cylinder to eventually develop a squeak. This appears to be a common issue on Porsches using ATE 200 fluid. Here is an example thread with video of the same pedal squeak I had.
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/bra...queaky.245214/ More details if you're interested: I have used ATE brake fluid on multiple cars in the past with no issues. A few months after flushing my brake fluid with ATE, I developed a slight squeaking sound from the brake pedal, coming from the master cylinder. It was most noticeable on light braking when releasing the brake. I ended up replacing the master cylinder (thinking it was defective) and filling it with ATE fluid, which fixed the issue. A few months later, after a couple of light track days, I decided to flush with fresh ATE fluid again. In the middle of flushing, the squeak came back. At that point, I suspected it was the brake fluid causing the noise and did some research. I quickly found that this appears to be a common issue on Porsches using ATE fluid. I decided to re-flush with genuine BMW brake fluid (which is low viscocity), and after flushing about 24 ounces of BMW fluid through, the squeaking completely stopped. The bmw fluid fixed the issue and it has been fine for a couple months now. I ended up unnecessarily replacing the master cylinder when the issue was the ATE brake fluid. Hope this saves someone from the same experience. |

Interesting... Been using ATE TYP 200/super blue in all my cars for the last 2 decades... Havent had any squeaks.
I installed TYP 200 in the F80 on 1/2020 and just flushed it with new TYP 200 on 6/2021 for a track event. No squeaks either. Thanks for sharing though. Might help someone who does have a squeaky pedal... |

No issues with Castrol SRF here but I was considering ATE at some point. Good to know.

I flushed my F25 with ATE Typ 200 - the brake pedal became super noisy. SO suggested that I am paranoid at first, until we stoped at the traffic light. I am going to re-flush it with BMW branded one next week.

I appreciate the heads-up. There's two new bottles of Até 200 on my bench now being returned to FCP. I guess I'll go with Motul.

Just reporting my experience so far. Still no sqeaking with ATE TYP200. Been using it on the F80 since 1/20. I will admit that i dont put a lot of miles on the car. Been around 5k miles in that period with a track weekend and 1 fluid change in 6/21.

Glad I found this thread. I’ve also been using Type 200 in my E90 for years but now have a squeaky master cylinder in my F30 after using it. Off to the dealer to buy the genuine stuff to see if it cures it.
Update: no threads about this on F30 forums but I flushed today with 1.5 litres of BMW fluid using pressure bleeder and also pumping the pedal a couple of times during. Squeak still there. Going to leave it a bit and see if anything changes. Last edited by wrongmark; 02-11-2023 at 04:45 PM.. Reason: Update |

I had similar experience - after a 3 bottles/1L of the BMW fluid pedal noise did not go away completely, but significantly reduced to semi-acceptable level.
I’ll be replacing calipers this summer on F25 (bigger brake upgrade) - will report if pedal noise disappears after second flush. My plan is to use ATE, but this time I’ll go with LV spec fluid

Just wanted to add to this incase it helps some other people out there and also ask a question.
Firstly I recently flushed BMW fluid for ATE 200 in my F10 M5 and within 150 miles have a squeaky pedal so it’s definitely the fluid and effects F10 M5’s too. Secondly does the ATE 200 fluids viscosity cause any other issues? My brakes feel good but I don’t want it to damage the master cylinder or anything… is it safe to leave in there until my next brake fluid change and put up with the noise or should I get it flushed ASAP? |

Personally, I would flush it with LV fluid sooner rather than later. |

I flushed with ate about a month ago and the squeak came. Just today I flushed with OEM brake fluid and after 1.6 liters it just went away. We flushed about a liter from the rear. After a few pumps on the front the squeak was gone.
I only drove 200km with ate. It's possible damage can be done if left longer. Last edited by Funkymonkey; 02-02-2024 at 02:55 AM.. |

Unless you’re tracking your car regularly, you should use a low viscosity (LV) brake fluid which is what BMW designed the car to use and what BMW oem fluid has been for 15+ years. Normal viscosity (NV) brake fluids can affect the DSC and ABS systems performance. NV is fine on dedicated track cars because the viscosity of NV brake fluid drops with temperature and its viscosity at track temperatures is close enough to LV viscosity to not cause issues. I use Motul LV DOT 4/5.1 brake fluid on the street, and Red Line RL-700 or AP Racing R4 for the track.
