Would You? Structual Damage

Hey fellas as i am selling my F10 tomorrow, i was going to another one from an older gentlament who dont drive thecar much its a 2014 stage 2 with 39k miles and 2 yrs warranty left for 44k... BUT than i was doing some online research and found this sexy 2018 M5 an hr from me for $54k but it has Structural damage rear ended.

My question is would you go with the
2014 F10 Competition Package clean title stage 2 with 2 yr warranty or

2018 F90 Structural damage Rear ended

If a car was cheap enough and I knew it was fixed right, I personally would not be opposed to a reconstruction title. You usually have to pay cash because banks won’t lend. They should be discounted significantly.

and if you look at the car fax

under Salvage | Junk | Rebuilt | Fire | Flood | Hail | Lemon
it says no problems so idk .... but yeah i would be getting it financed so i have to make sure the bank is ok with this

If not reconstructed title, bank should lend. I would trust BMW’s repair. But I would want to pay less than for a car that was never in an accident. If that is not offered, continue your car search.

2.5 months is a fairly long repair timeline, esp pre-covid. So that implies a fair amount of work. Can you get a copy of the repair order from the body shop to see what was involved?

I had a relatively small amount of non-structural damage done to my prior lease and had the repair done at a BMW certified facility. I told them on several occasions that I would not accept crap work and I knew what I was looking at/for. They said no problem, put their best people on it and had it reviewed by their most experienced body shop guy before I saw it. And, it was crap work.

My point is, do not take anyone's word for anything. Go see the car in detail and if you are not experienced at spotting good/bad work, take someone that is. Just because it was done by a BMW dealer, means next to nothing.

From a discount to market value perspective, I don't have much experience here, but I'd look for a minimum of 20-25% discount to the FMV of a clean carbon copy car, perhaps more.

Agree 2.5 months pre-covid is kinda long, but a lot of reasons of this could have happened.

My current M5C was in sideswipe accident no structural or frame damage, no airbags deployed. It'll be 2 months May 6th, which is close to when it's due back to me. +/- a day or 2.

No delays on parts, no back orders, no issues in getting anything, a few weeks passed while the insurance companies bickered, investigated, and having it towed around to different repair facilities.

The car is currently being re-assembled, panels painted, and they're backed up, and they take their time on cars like this. Add that to the early stage time where the car just sat while adjusters did their thing, and they argued with each other, investigations, then the approval from insurance once the body shop got the car apart ,etc. No issues other than those things add up to extra couple 2-3-4 weeks time.

I will say, I generally agree with you on the discounted price on a car with accident, but I don't think every accident is the same. 20-25% discount on a car that is in the 60-100k range is a big chunk of change just because it was in an accident.

Yes if it was major accident, and airbags deployed 15-20% could be fair. But for something relatively simple, I wouldn't count on that.

More important to me would be records of the work done, photos etc. Also an accident where airbags have been deployed to me is much more involved, and could be a lot more serious, and would require a bigger discount.

Im my most recent case, I told them the same thing, I would not tolerate any sort 1/2 assed work, with any body filler, or third party aftermarket panels, parts etc. So the bill came to almost $30,000.00. But the accident is actually not that serious. All BMW OEM parts.

Needed new front bumper cover, passenger front fender, passenger doors F&R, passenger side wheels F&R, 2 new tires, passenger side control arm and linkage etc, theyre replacing the PPF on the front of the car, and paint. Thats about it, and its $30,000.00. No frame damage, no structural, no airbags deployed.

Hell, just 2 new 789M wheels and 2 Michelin PS4S tires from BMW was about $5,000.00. I would never pay $5,000.00 for even 4x 789M with PS4S mounted! But insurance did for 2. So the dollar figure of the damage can be deceiving as well. Theyre being charged 3,000.00 for hood, fender, bumper PPF, which I would also never pay that much for. So almost 30% of the total bill is wrapped up in 2 wheels, 2 tires, and some vinyl wrap. Which is substantial cost but the damage to the car total is about $30,000.00 with out any really major work. Broken control arm and panels is it really. Which to me isn't a reason to not buy a car, but I would hope to get a discount on it. But 20-25% from a 75-80,000.00 car is a lot to ask IMHO.

Now, a rebuilt/salvage/junk/theft recovery title is very different. Another poster is correct most banks wont lend on it. But that would simply mean the car was totaled and sold at salvage auction etc. But the typical deduct for rebuilt salvage is about 40-50% value. At least thats what many dealers would expect to pay is about 1/2 of the actual cash value if the car was clean title.

I looked at this car too. It’s an amazing price and has every option. I googled and there is a very reputable shop that can do a PPI in Orlando so you could have them check it out and see if they think it was repaired well. If you don’t mind that’s it going to have a lower resale value it could be a great deal. I eventually decided it was too risky for me but maybe it’s right for you!

MPE, CCB’s and B&W it wasn’t a cheapo build when new. M Pro sport rear deck spoiler and front splitter as well? Looks like them but hard to tell.

It's sketchy as shit you have an accident in 2019, then 2 years later you have reported structural damage when he tries to sell the car. Magically the car gets 20k miles without changing owners or a new title so probably the manager at the one dealership drove the piss out of it then it magically ends up in Arizona where it gets a new title (probably bought from auction because no one wanted to touch it with a stick) then magically its in Florida (probably got sold at auction again because of reasons)

California is one of a handful of states where you can wash a salvage title to clean title and the trick is to register the car in AZ apparently here's a ss from the link I posted. Again DO NOT BUY
