As this is my first M5, I was wondering what everyone's thoughts on as far as paint protection:
1) total film wrap 2)ceramic coating 3)leave as is thanks! |

1. PPF on 'paper' sounds great and looks great but practically was a expensive pain in the ass! Really expensive, I got Expel on my E63S. It did protect the car but it ripped and cut fairly easily and replacing a panel so it aesthetically continued to look good as expensive. You are limited car wash wise as well, as long as you are happy to wash your own car and are careful it's fine, but I had to replace a panel as a valeter got too forceful with a power washer. If you want it off, that's a cost too. 2. Ceramic coating I've gone with this on my M5 2022. I'm delighted with it as I got a really good company to do it and it has really brought out the colour of my car (MBB). It is much easier to clean than the PPF'd Mercedes. It won't have as much protection but I'm going to do regular top ups and can deal with little nicks. I won't PPF my cars again, especially as I lease them, so cost v benefit doesn't make sense. I also feel the maintenance is easier with ceramic but that's just my personal opinion. Over a 3 year period, the PPF cost me c£7,000 including additional panels and getting it taken off, which I couldn't justify again. |

PPF will be easy to maintain thanks to its self healing capabilities, it's a lot more forgiving. Any swirl marks from people rubbing against your car or a dirty towel can be removed by simply pouring hot water on the affected area (or leave it out in the sun lol) and it will become like new. The only downside with PPF is you have to be careful when pressure washing. A powerful jet, at the right angle can lift your film. But that problem is easily avoided by simply being careful yourself, or warning the guys at the car wash I haven't done this myself, but I heard good reviews from people who used a PPF specific coating such as Gtechniq Halo. Super easy to apply and it gives you the benefits of a ceramic coating (easier cleaning, water beading..) |
