Are US market cars now shipping with Anti-Dazzle enabled?
I am posting up in case others have noticed this with their LCI cars, or even better, have knowledge to be able to answer the underlying question. As I’ve heard from a couple people, one a BMW coder, that the archaic US regulation that has prevented us from enjoying the dynamic “tunneling” LED headlights is changing or may have already gone into effect in October. I was advised that before I pay someone to code this capability back into my car, to check if my dealer can do it themselves through a SW update.
Now, the other night, I turned on auto-high beams for the first time, and immediately noticed behavior that looked to me very much like tunneling as cars passed me by. I’ve never owned a car with this feature before so I’m not 100% confident in my interpretation of what I saw. Do others know if this is a feature that’s now already enabled from the factory on cars produced after October? Or perhaps if the new SW package addressing the tank ventilation recall also includes this new capability? That would sure be a nice Easter egg! -Ash |

I’ve noticed some type of effect where the lights sort of “fade in”, from center to the outside, whenever switching from low to high beam. Not sure whether this might be what you are referring to.

Not exactly what I think I saw.... If anything it was the opposite, like true tunneling.

It's not impossible some enabled cars made it through the checks, but it's more likely the adaptive vertical low beam cutoff is more noticeable with the pixel led. FMVSS 108 was slated for deregulation this past October, however the publication into the Federal Register has not yet occurred and may not be done until after the new administration is sworn in. |

I could confirm LCI does have tunneling, at least mine does. And wow what a change compared to pre LCI lights. Pretty awesome to see.

So I'm in Blacksburg, VA which tends to be pretty dark. I did previously own a pre-LCI before the LCI, and I first noticed it when driving home. What the lights create is a sort of tunnel like automatic high beam which projects in front of you, to bring more attention directly in sight of the driver. And when going up my hill, while driving straight, the lights kind of flare out, to give the driver more illumination, and then flare back in. It's pretty awesome, and I thought I was tripping out the first time after a 14 hour shift.

That's what I think I'm seeing too! I need to find a more remote road that has elevation changes, turns, etc too, to be sure it's not a bias on my part. But your comment gives me some hope that it's not. Thanks!

This is what I think you're both seeing plus the center mid field distribution return (looks a bit like a mollusk shell closing towards the car at the midline). This is not Selective Beam/GFHB/No-Dazzle HBA. |

Thanks lemetier. I can't say for sure if that is or isn't what I saw without going out and comparing it again. But I defer to your knowledge and suspect I haven't got anti dazzle yet.
Do you think it makes more sense to get it coded, or wait and see how quickly the new administration moves the ball down the field? |

FMVSS 108 Final Rule
Looks like it has been proposed for final rule but not published in CFR yet, as Lemetier states. |
