I’d insure the car from Geico which includes mechanical break down. Insurance or as we call it an extended warranty for 7 years/100,000 miles. Very inexpensive. After 4 years the depreciation levels off. At that point I would unload the car if it’s problematic or keep it until it does become problematic. But I agree 100% with the depreciation issue. As phenomenal as this car is and it truly is, they depreciate unbelievably! Just enjoy it while you have it and try not to think about it. If you go with BMW’s warranty on this car, I was told it’s $15k for three more years.

But this is all normal. The same type of rapid depreciation happened to the F10. FWIW's, my buy out on my wife's 320 is something like $32k, and trade in value is $18k. This is ~10 months out of lease end, original lease was 36/10. So negative equity of $14k. On a car that is over double the value, I assume that negative equity would be at least double... so probably $30-$40k at this point.

I am looking for a 19 M5, Competition or Base is ok with me. Honestly I will not get one until May of next year and am in the process of selling my 7 series now. Would love to be in the low 70k range without CCB. The biggest question would be should I get CPO only or take a chance on other dealers. I don't want a modded car that may have been thru the ringer.

I mean, double edged. Sure, you don’t get the depreciation, but you pay $50,000 to rent the car 3 years and have nothing. Seems pretty bad to me too.
With buying, you only care about its value if you want to sell...which you don’t have to if you plan on driving 8 or 10 years. Of course it doesn’t make sense to buy and trade in 4 years, but buying and keeping for 9 years makes a lot more sense. Leasing is a luxury that gives you new cars every 3 years, but you pay dearly for that luxury. |

With a lease you can also invest the FIAT you would have otherwise had locked up in the car.

However, I drive 18k-20k miles per year.....so in 3 years, I have an out of warranty car that probably will be worth $60k when I turn it in (down from $115k MSRP). Leasing would lose me way less money.....and depending on your state's tax....a buyer of a new car loses even more. If I pay 6% sales tax on a new car purchase, that's another $7k I lose right away on paying sales tax.

In 6 years on a lease, you’ll have spent $100k. If you finance, the car is paid for in 6 years and still worth let’s say $30-40k. If you sell then, you’ll be ahead. The car will still have value in 9 years too, magnifying the impact. |

Depreciation only matters if you buy it and sell in 3 years. That’s stupid. |

I haven’t seen anyone mention the fact that outside of 3-4 years, you’re now either spending extra money on an extended warranty or shelling out cash to maintain a high-mileage M5 at that point.

Am trading it soon offered exactly what I paid 9 months ago and great deal no one else has on new car. So not inflating trade and selling high on new car My opinion is they make way too many M cars now, discount them so drastically and they are no longer as desirable as they used to be. Case in point new M8's all at 22-25% discounts. It's craziness

22-25% off M8 Depends on when you purchase. I got 19k which is 17% off my ordered 2019 M5 when I purchased. This was back in sept 2018
