Front intercooler rad annihilated by a tiny rock

Anyone else had this happened to them? Looks like the front area is wide open to anything that’s flying in and the rad on the front is made out of a tin foil with no protection... the dealer wanted almost $3000 to replace something that cost $100 at best and a $70 to mend.... no aftermarket available yet (I guess it’s a great time to make one). The best part about this is that you will not get any warnings and I drove like this for about 4000km without knowing there was a problem! I occasionally had the car go into limp mode because of the high temperature intake air, but it would reset back to normal within 30 seconds! Obviously BMW does not want to take the blame for poor design and bad quality part and just talks about how it’s an accident...

This is the biggest scam BMW dealers use. Always there's a rock or stone that causes damage and its alway over $1000!

Sorry to hear. But at least you were lucky it was not the engine oil cooler which is also right up front but facing down and inches away from the ground fully exposed to potential debris bouncing into it at speed. Several owners including some who post here have already had this engine oil cooler punctured resulting in instant loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine failure in some cases resulting in the need for engine replacement. At least for the engine oil cooler, there is an aftermarket guard made by Fall Line motorsports that you can purchase and install.

The oil cooler is a bit higher quality design and it is in a slightly lower risk area... I am also considering that guard already though...

For the engine oil cooler I have the aftermarket guard made by Fall Line motorsports for my F90 M5 Comp. Better to be safe than sorry.

For the.folks that have had their oil cooler punctured, has it been from rocks? or something more substantial like ice, sticks, etc?

Moderator, please remove this tread, it is giving me chest pain.

I am installing window screen in my car to protect the intercooler. Using the heavy duty type that is designed to hold up to dogs. I'll post photos once it is done. Should not restrict air flow too much and since it's black should be invisible to the eye.

LOL

Don’t worry too much... the good news is that this intercooler rad is very easy to remove (you can do it in your garage without a hoist in under an hour) and any rad repair shop can mend it in a few minutes, will be like new again! Also if it happens on a highway, you probably won’t even know about it until you see a leak on your driveway, and it’s definitely not a tow truck case... The oil cooler on the other hand, can cause a more serious problem... I too want to know how easy can a rock damage an oil cooler as it looks like It’s made much tougher than an intercooler rad 🤔
