my big question is: if you leave it totally stock, take it to the track and it breaks... will BMW fix it under warranty?

In a performance DCT car you actually have zero power loss between shifts as the next gearset clutch is grabbing as the current gearset clutch is clutching off simultaneously. In the newer performance DCT's like mclarens not only do you have no loss in power but you actually get a brief surge/boost of power from the inertia. You can read all about it in mclarens 650s press release. These new age automatics are blazing fast but can not touch true performance DCT's at the upper echelon. If these automatics could shift faster and even shift two gears faster like you are claiming we would see them on all the HyperCars and even super cars. It's simply not true no matter what Bmw spices up. Chevy made the same claims with the 8 speed automatic in the z06 being 30% faster than the pdk in the 911 but in reality it wasn't even close. |

Facts: Dual Transmission Gear Box overlapping is not 100% without power interruption. There's always some. The inertial Lightning Shifts are not unique. The DCT updates beginning with the F10 have this feature. The 8L90 was faster than the Midrange PDK version used for testing. It is not faster than PDK with Sport Chrono or PDK-S. As described for the ZF 8 speed planetary Gen 2 and newer... "The shift elements enable changing gears without traction interruption. For this reason, all gearshifts (from first to eighth gear and back) are performed as overlapping gear changes. During the shift process, the "transmitting" clutch remains actuated with a lower pressure value until the "receiving" clutch can transmit the torque." The shifts are not the Torque Converter, but with the internal clutches and brake sets. The speed is courtesy of the worlds 2nd fastest shifting gearbox, the ZF 8P45R (8HP without Torque Converter as daily street use isn't a factor), that allowed an advanced software and electronics architecture for planetary gearset transmissions to be developed, tested, and ultimately incorporated. |
