Next generation BMW M5 (F90) prototype first sighting! Spy Photos, Videos, Info
BIMMERPOST NEWS Next generation BMW M5 (F90) prototype first sighting Updated May 16, 2017 The F90 M5 reveal is imminent and that means the prototype has begun dropping camo aggressively. Just spotted at the Nurburgring is this M5 prototype revealing its front bumper design. It's consistent with the previously leaked CAD images, which we then used to render the F90 M5 in all its glory (see images in gallery). Stay tuned as the next couple of weeks will bring the first journalist reviews of the pre-production M5. Further confirmed info on the F90 M5 can be seen in the previous updates below and at http://www.bimmerpost.com/f90-m5/. Updated April 21, 2017 Two new videos from testing on the Nurburgring: Updated March 31, 2017 This update brings us the first look at the F90 M5 19" multi-spoke standard wheel, as well as a couple of new videos. Our latest info (by ynguldyn) still shows that the F90 M5 will be powered by the S63B44T4 engine, an updated version of the current M5's S63B44T2 engine. It will also be xDrive only. Note that the "T4" designation on the F90 M5 engine indicates an upgrade from the F10 M5's "T2" engine. Here is the 19" multi-spoke wheel. Video from F80 M5 testing at Nurburgring. Video of three M5, with look at M seats. Updated October 5, 2016 with first peek at aggressive seats Updated October 4, 2016 with newest spy video from Nurburgring Updated September 21, 2016 with most revealing spy photos yet. Our latest photos give us the clearest look yet at the F90 M5 carbon fiber roof and M mirrors. Updated August 26, 2016 with newest sighting from the Nurburgring This latest prototype features a carbon fiber roof and new mirrors in the style of the M3/M4. Updated July 25, 2016 with photos previewing front end styling The F90 M5 prototype has dropped its front end plastic camouflage in favor of a cloth covering. And while the cloth covering still covers the entire front end, its soft shape allows us to make out the front end styling and lines. What we can definitely make out is that the next gen M5 with its massive front air intakes will be much more aggressively styled than the current model. Updated July 4, 2016 with photos of F90 M5 prototype entering U.S. Updated May 23, 2016 with 2 new videos. Updated April 26, 2016 with new photos. The F90 M5 prototype drops more camouflage, revealing the full shape of the headlights and kidney grilles, as well as the shape of the rear tail lights. It also now wears more aggressively styled side skirts and a small trunk lip spoiler. The brake calipers have been painted blue like all steel M brakes. We expect the F90 M5 to launch approximately a year after the standard G30 5 Series is launched, with an online reveal for the F90 M5 coming in Summer 2017, an auto show debut in Fall 2017 and sales beginning at the end of 2017 - Spring 2018. Updated March 25, 2016 with new video. Updated March 23, 2016 with the first video of the F90 M5 prototype! Updated March 22, 2016 with new photos The F90 M5 has been spotted conducting further testing, with less front end camouflage than before. The large air intakes are now visible in the lower front fascia. Updated with new info November 2015 F90 M5 is confirmed with the same engine as the current F10 M5 (tweaks are possible of course) and xDrive only. Updated with new pics July 13, 2015 We spy the next generation BMW M5 (F90) at the Nurburgring! The M5 prototype just arrived at BMW's M test center, and was accompanied by just about everything else in BMW's range of M cars. What makes this prototype the next M5 and not another hybrid eDrive G30 prototype or standard G30 5 Series? To start, this prototype was spotted at BMW M's Nurburgring test center. It also does not have the hybrid eDrive plug door at the front fender. This M5 prototype has larger front air intakes, cross drilled rotors, beefy tires, quad exhaust and a finned M differential cover. As with the next 5 Series (G30), the future M5 will be built on BMW's CLAR platform, utilizing a carbon fiber core [see official CLAR details] No doubt the next gen M5 will see even more power -- in the 600+ HP range, and to deal with putting that power down it will most likely be offered with AWD xDrive (which we hope is optional). We previously spotted an F10 M5 testing AWD [see photos], which together with the recent rhetoric from BMW M probably makes AWD all but a certainty, and a necessity. BMW M boss, Franciscus van Meel, recently on AWD: "If we continue the power increases in the future – especially regarding torque and also horsepower – then probably the next generation M5 and M6 will have so much torque and power that we need to think about those solutions." "So if we go on a direction of four-wheel drive, for us it will really be like a rear-wheel drive with more traction." "Whatever technology we’re talking about, the properties of an M car must remain rear-wheel drive; very agile, very precise. And I don’t like the phrase ‘four-wheel drive’. Emotionally it sounds stoic, neutral and understeery. If we are talking about M I think we’re talking about rear-wheel drive with added traction. We are looking into those things because power and torque will only increase, and we will run into the necessity of these kind of systems." As for transmission, we expect that this will be the first generation M5 not offered with a manual transmission option. Expect the next M5 to come begin sales in late 2017 - early 2018. |

As expected, no rear flared fenders
Overall design also seems to follow the new 7 evolution rather than revolution I'd call it a facelift of a facelift

The new 5er will be the pinnacle of Performance in its segment.
At the top will be the new M5 followed by the Power eDrive 5er and the (European Only) M550d. So there is something for everybody, depending on what your country's tax programme is like.

Hey Scottt, can you shed some light on why the next M5 is being developed under the F90 code? I thought all carbon fiber infused cars are using the G codes.

I still see those weak-sauce sliding rear calipers. Man, come on BMW, ditch those already. For such a big car, you're going to keep those weenie rear brakes?

I see these prototypes every year in Munich, so I'm not relying on photos to judge. For example the M3 prototype was screaming fenders, which the panels cant hide especially in person im expecting an aggressive facia from what i can see here, so its not all negative I hope bmw can surprise me this time. Last week we were invited in Dubai to see the new 7er, and that was part of my reference here. I felt bmw was happy with an evolution, which didn't give me a wow effect, even though the displayed vehicle was an individual as well, i surely would take an S class over that
