Who is the go to for getting quick OEM replacement parts such as the coolant tank?
17-13-7-889-450 I need to get one asap and my dealer won’t be able to have one till after our next race event, 9/8 which won’t cut it. |

It could be a good option if we are 100% sure that it solves the problem. |

This will not prevent the problem but divert the leaking fluid from the coolant tank. At least that is the description provided on the IND web page. A replacement coolant tank costs $177.05 and is discounted around $130 to $140 on the web. One would think this coolant tank shield ($650) would be priced lower than a replacement coolant tank since it is just the lower half expanded to fit the stock coolant tank.

This all reminds me of the band-aids applied to the POS Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines in the F-14A back in the 70's and 80's: They can't stop the engines from exploding so they just put some shielding around the turbine to catch the bits before they cause a fire and loss of aircraft.

I'm not planning on buying one, but since others were concerned I thought I'd share it.

I guess we will know in the next few months or so... I think that the idea of having the coolant deviate is a good thing, but pricey for a piece of plastic, my 2 cents. |

I think the real question is whether those other coolant tanks that aren't supported by this expensive shield work any better lol

They would drip into a safer place, but if it is a pressure related spray, that spray might still go where it could do damage. As part of the relocation, a simple shield could be added to address that.

Coolant reservoir
42k miles and Mines leaking out of the sides. white and green crust around it with obvious leak. I just had that car serviced a month ago and nothing was ever said. Bummer
question? turbo coolant is the same as regular coolant? |

Just as an FYI, I'm currently looking down the barrel of a $17k+ rebuild due to a coolant tank leak! Make your own minds up whether a $600 piece of plastic that diverts one problem from becoming a bigger more expensive problem is of value. I'm installing an RK billet tank, RK are doing the rebuild... however I'm not yet convinced that this completely resolves the issue. It can still vent from the cap and dribble down to Cylinder 7! |

How is that possible? I could see the injector issues causing the engine to run lean and hot, but I would expect all kinds of codes/check engine light long before that causes 17k in damage since the car should detect lean conditions based on O2 sensor.

This is not the first one — I have read of several engines ruined due to leaking coolant tanks damaging injectors or ignition coils. In some cases they were under warranty and BMW paid.

I'm not doubting, I would like to know what is the mechanism that causes the damage. If the car is catless or turned then I could see how DME won't protect the car because it doesn't know what is really happening.
Reading about the injector control (CVO), it says DME is supposed to determine how much fuel is getting in based on current and voltages to the injector (as opposed to the old N54 and early N/S63 when you had to program the injector tolerances when replaced). I could see how when the coolant eats away at the injector electronics it messes up the current/voltage. The technical guides don't talk about failure modes but I would hope they did something to protect the engine or detect really crazy values. Or is the Germans being too clever for their own good, making something that works perfect until Murphy intervenes... Either way I check the tank every 2 weeks. |

It makes no sense! Low coolant warning and a whole lot of other minor issues prior 17k+ mess. Also, if this issue happens so often to all M550i's and M5's out there, we should start a campaign pushing a recall from BMW. It will be beneficial for many owners out there! |

Hey all
Here's a summary of my story: Had the car (2019 M5C) for just under a year. Apart from dropping $5k on a replacement A/C Condenser, she's been good. About 2 months ago, she started to intermittently stall on startup and occassionally felt like she had lumpy cams. No CEL. Went to the local INDI and they found multiple misfire codes on cylinder 5 and 7. Swapped around coils and deduced that was not the issue. Replaced the four injectors on the left hand bank. Seemed to be resolved. Drove her across the weekend (<300 miles) and the stalling issue returned. Also, just as I was pulling into my street I could smell hot coolant. Pulled into my drive and turned her off immediately. Leaking tank. Tow truck back to the INDI, replaced tank, cleared codes (misfire again). A few more miles, still the same. Back to the INDI. Compression on left bank and Leak Down test on 7: "compression readings #5-195psi #6-205psi #7-180-190psi #8-210psi. acceptable difference between cylinders is 10%. #7 has a compression difference of approx. 15%. performed leakdown on #7. #7 has a 80% leak. most allowable amount of leak is 40% per leakdown tool. air can be felt/heard from oil cap, cylinder 6, and exhaust. Recommend engine replacement" After this testing the CEL is now constantly on. They believe that prior to when I bought the car, the tank failed resulting in the issues with cylinder 7. On review of the carfax, indeed the car had a failed tank 1000 miles prior to when I bought her. At the time of purchase I did review the carfax, but at that time had no idea of the issues relating to the tanks. The strange thing is that she ran fine for 9 or so months... and after learning of the tank issues I would regularly cast an eye over the tank. Even when fully diagnosed, she runs ok. Feels down on power but even at idle I cannot feel a misfire - most of the time. Apart from Intakes and a racechip, she's stock. Btw, whilst I consider myself a little handy, I'm no mechanic. |
