Transfer Case Oil Change
Hello guys! About to perform the 50k mile service for the front, rear differential and the transfer case. Front and rear diff look pretty simple. Upon reading my service manual, I wanted to see if anyone could explain this portion in more detail please regarding the transfer case.
Change Transfer Box Oil: • Run the "oil change" service function with the BMW diagnosis system during the oil change to ensure that the VTG is drained and filled completely. ![]() Do I need special equipment for this or is this something I can do via Bimmerlink. Thanks in advance! |

My understanding is that it's just a simple drain and fill to the level of the fill plug. Just make sure you use the right fluid, part number 83-22-2-409-710. Then reset the transfer case fluid sensor with a scan tool.

Interesting. I'm not doubting you, but I'm just curious where you got this information. I've never encountered a BMW transfer case that requires cycling solenoids to drain fluid. You can also always replace the same volume you remove, and while it may not be all of it, it would still be beneficial.

Thanks so much for sharing, this is extremely helpful. I'm hoping I can get access to the fill plug on the transfer case without having to remove the support cross member, but we'll see.
