Rear driving light failure

Just looking for some advice before I shell out on a new part:

My offside rear driving light seems to have stopped working, it's a pre lci 57 plate 335i so no LED's involved just normal bulbs.

I've inspected the bulb which seems ok, swapped it out for a known good one but still its dead, checked the housing the bulb sits in which is clean and good.
Also checked fuses 52/53 and they are all ok.

The indicator, reverse and brake lights all function ok it's just the main driving light that's out. Unless I am told other wise my next step is to replace the plastic bulb housing with this part

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Genuin...item27d262eda1

Before I do that, is there anything else I can check I may have overlooked?

thanks

Phil

Assuming you have a E92 ther rear tail lights are LED and you require a complete new light unit.

Are you sure about that because removing the bulb housing shows 4 bulbs, I amber and 3 clear. no LEDS in sight. I would take a pic but it's raining now.

yes it's a e92

Here you go, this is the part that hold the bulbs - no led's in here. it's the 2nd on up that won't come on.

On E90/91 cars yes, but I thought the E92 had LED bars from launch?

Seeing the picture of the holder has me questioning that now. Obviously the amber is the turn indicator, one is reversing light, one is the brake light. So the other is either an addional brake bulb for dynamic braking or it does light the bars instead of LEDs.

The LEDs would be part of the light unit and sealed, they wouldn't be part of the bulb holder....

I think it's just a clever deisgn to make it look like LED bars, Ive removed the whole light and no LEDS in there. Even in Halfords it says "LED" as a replacement part so must be confusion someplace.

But from looking at the bulb holders and the inside of the light iam 99% sure it's all bulb driven.

Looks like you need a holder then.... Sorry for the confusion, just didn't want to buying something that maybe wasn't required

If you look at the bulb holder there are two sprung metal pads these make contact on the light unit for the bars on the taillight.

If we are talking e92/93 the pre lci tail light bars are LED, had one of mine fail on a e93 before fitting new lci version. No way of getting into it cluster to repair.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought they were, just doubted myself.

Doesn't help the OP though... New cluster required rather than the holder unless the spring clips are faulty as said on a previous post.

17 for the bulb holder or 70 for the entire unit including holder so will prob just get the whole unit

So I guess the lights must be a combo or bulb and led bars?

Little update on this problem.

The rear lights have 4 bulbs (2 brake, 1 indicator, 1 reverse) and indeed LED light bars as UKbeemerboy said.

have checked everything I can and have now ordered an entire new light, which was £65 so not too bad. fingers crossed it fixes it.

I am starting to think my FRM2 module has broken, along with my left rear tail light, my drivers side front zenon has now stopped coming on (new bulbs last Aug) also reverse light on left not coming on, and number plate bulb failure warnings coming up.

I've ordered a new rear light so will see if this sorts out the rear lighting issues, if it does then I guess it's either the FRM or the ballast affecting the front xenon.

I do like my car but ppl did warn me of "electrical gremlins"

There is an SIB for the rear light cluster. I had my pre lci (2007) replaced in late 2013. Search on here and you shall find. Mine were replaced under warranty. I suspected the light control module under the steering at first but I ended up going through bulb after bulb after bulb. I soon noticed that the emergency brake light bulb was always dim (this only comes on if you slam the brakes hard). All bulbs would soon light up but I kept getting a fault code for either light cluster.
