performance tires are fragile? broken three times in past three months
Hi, I got my M340 on this January. Due to the terrible road condition in US east (Mass), the tires have been broken three times already.
I'm using the run flat performance tire by Bridgestone (turanza t005 rft r19) First time I was driving on a local road and hit a pothhole. Two days after, the right front tire ran flat (fig 1) Second time I was driving on a highway and cannot avoid another pothhole on the road. It turned out left front tire had a bubble (fig 2) With above experience, I was driving carefully with the pothhole on roads. However, one week after I just fixed the left front tire, I was driving on a local road with 40 mph and hit another pothhole. This time right front tire had a bubble again... (fig 3) Luckily I brought the tire insurance so the cost is tolerable, but having to fix tires in this frequency is really PITA. Why the performance run flat tires are so fragile? Any advice to improve this experience? Thank you! |

I too, had the Bridgstone RFTs on my M440ix as stock. After 3 years I finally just today replaced them. Originally 225/40/19, I went with some non-RFTs Continental DSW06’s in 235/40/19. I was hoping the lip protection for the rim would be a little better on these 8-inch wide 797M rims, but, still better than what I had in the Bridgestones. I think with 245’s I would have been rubbing somewhere. Roadnoise in the cabin is GREATLY diminished. Bumps are also well absorbed by these.

I'm in eastern MA, the pothole situation is seriously out of control.
Popped one tire, second got a bubble and bent a rim, third was a screw... I have the warranty as well, sadly it did not cover the bend, it was slight, so I was able to get it repaired.

100% agree on mass potholes.
I bent too many wheels, changed too many tires. I’m seriously thinking of steel rims for the winter. Fulqrum in your experience with non-RFT does that prevent damaging the rims? |

A slightly taller & wider sidewall will always help to diminish the potential damage to rims. The trade off being, of course, that it may impact handling a little, as well as slightly distort actual MPH readout on the speedometer. I would think the rft’s sidewalls would have performed better when hitting potholes but I guess not.

Had the same size tires on my M340 and had five tire sidewall failures over about 50k miles. Mine were 19” Pirelli P7’s, and they couldn’t handle potholes at speed.
I considered switching to 18’s, since they were also a factory option, or trying another brand of tire. Finally ended up selling the car because I needed it for long trips, and the tire blowouts with no spare were really inconvenient. Calling AAA is a nearly useless solution when you are hundreds of miles from the nearest BMW dealer, and/or it’s a weekend and most tire stores cannot get special order tires until Monday. Most local tire stores do not keep low profile, H or V rated tires on the shelf, unless they are a BMW dealer. Very frustrating to find a tire bubble on Friday afternoon, and be told the tire store can definitely have your new tire first thing Monday morning. |

I was running the recommended pressure, which I believe was 39/42 psi. They were 19” Pirelli P7’s, stock square size, on 792M wheels.
Hitting an unexpected pothole always makes me cringe, but after having the first couple of tires fail it was even more cringe-worthy. The typical failure was to cause a baseball sized sidewall bulge, or actually blow out a flap of rubber about the size of a baseball. I had the BMW tire and wheel warranty, and they always said the wheel was fine. |
