maintenance plan worth it?
Buying my car at lease end soon. Dealer has offered to extend the maintenance plan out to 1/2025 for $4899. Does that sound reasonable?
27,000 miles on the car, I drive about 9K/yr. Seems like I can have the maintenance done at an indy shop (maybe even the dealership) for far less unless I need rotors, and the schedule for that isn't clear to me. Thanks for any advice.

Agree with above. Ask around the forums, and may be able to get a better deal. That's not too crazy high from my experience, but I'd shop around a little. I wouldn't put an exact dollar figure on what I'd spend for a good maintenance program, but that number quoted isn't it.

You're talking just maintenance, right? And not the extended warranty?
I bought my wife's X3 lease out in 2016 after 3 years and 30,000 miles. It was old enough that I think the brakes would have been covered under maintenance. Never needed them, which is strange. We live up in the hills and have always done brakes at 25k or less for many, many cars. So I extended the maintenance another year and the warranty for 3 more - about $5k. Blew thru 3 years, covid kept mileage down and now we are naked at only at 45,000 miles. Just had it in for an oil change and they said the brakes are still fine. Sheesh. Got very little out of both programs - just a tiny bit of service stuff. Runs like a top. Screw it. Warranty plans are hit or miss, but if enough maintenance stuff is covered and you know the future costs, those plans might be an OK deal. 1 brake job would've made me whole. Now I'm SOL. But, I've done a couple extended warranties that more than paid for themselves. Insurance is always hit or miss. But maintenance is more of a sure thing. Good luck. As snowbimmer said, is that just maintenance or warranty too? The extended warranty includes maintenance, and at that cost I suspect that's what you're getting?
You wouldn't need that much maintenance in the next 3 years. I just priced the warranty/service plan for mine, and it was around 6k for 3 years (I'm not in the US though). |

Our warranty just fixes broken things. The maintenance plan takes care of service and wear items. You get to buy 2 things.

I bought the Scheduled Maintenance Upgrade for $899.00 which extends the plan to 5 years/75K miles. I am now at year 2.5 and 39K miles... It includes everything except brakes and wipers. If you are keeping the car it's a no-brainer.

These extended maintenance prices are not a no brainer. Each starts at in service date, so subtract 3 years to know how long the coverage is extended. 48 months/50k miles $1649 60 months/75k miles $2949 72 months/100k miles $4499 84 months/125k miles $5799

I got a quote from my local dealership on my 2019 M5 recently and I put my pricing in quotes behind the ones listed above.
48 months/50k miles $1649 ( $1899) 60 months/75k miles $2949 ( $3299) 72 months/100k miles $4499 ( $4799) 84 months/125k miles $5799[/QUOTE] |

The one you listed, I agree, you need to estimate and calculate if they're worth it and if you will be driving the car that long. The $899.00 option I mentioned IS a no brainer though. It extends the original included scheduled service to 2 more years and 39K additional miles. I did the last visit included in the original service plan just before 36K, then a month later, car scheduled itself for break fluid. Dealer quoted ~$220 for that and my next regular service includes transmission flush and several other things, that they estimated will be around $600, so the plan would pay off itself after that first full service. I will have 30K miles and more than 2 years left, so I will do around 4 more scheduled visits for "free" PS: my dealer didn't want to sell me this plan, saying it wasn't available, but it was shown as an option in the mybmw garage. I told the SA to call BMW and figure out why they can't sell it and I was just about to leave, it turned out he was "sorting the options wrong". |
