I have plugged tires several times, RS6, Sienna, Civic, Q7, all were able to keep on trucking until the tread bars were nearly gone. LOL. Patch.....those are actually better, but requires going to the shop, unmounting tire from rim, etc, I just keep a plug kit in the trunk of all my cars. Very easy to use at the road side, but I have been luck enough to only have to do this in my garage.
They will always try to sell you a new tire....
