How hard is it to do and what kind of equipment do you need? Is it basically just the same stuff that the dealer has or is it more simple than that?

I guess it depends on what you want to code...a friend here has the SW to code things like auto folding mirrors, auto start/stop default on off etc...no big deal according to him...
