Not sure their logic but the previous was just the f10 M5 though the m3 has a different number than the regular 3 series.
Very simple. They are carrying over the old engine. Therefore they will not use the new G designation. Mercedes AMG has carried over old engines to new body styles and then updated the engine with a life cycle refresh. BMW has never done this before with an M car but they will introduce a new v8 4L for the LCI. I think the M8 prototype is using that new engine simply because the sound is very different from the current exhaust notes. Next LCI M5 might be called the G30 M5, but time will tell.
