I was in the same boat as you prior to the Apple WWDC keynote this past Monday that "Apple announced support for third-party map applications in CarPlay. The company says that Waze and Google Maps will be supported on CarPlay with iOS 12."

This is will occur in the fall, having access to Waze is a game changer to avoid police radar, especially in a M vehicle.
