M cars are another beast completly and not apart of this discussion! But, as "for bucking this tradition" The 335 is one of the first BMW's to not have the dual exhaust tips on the driver side, but single tips on each side.

645i was the first, I think that is where BMW got the inspiration for the 335i.
I'm sure cost and trying to be more traditional are the two main reasons BMW when the single side rout.
