I think they're very well thought out.

Imagine you are driving in winter with lots of road salt, lights on, washers come on - perfect. Who cares about dirtying the car when it's covered in crap.

Re squirting all over a clean car - why activate them in the first place? I don't even want to wet my windscreen after a wash and dry.

And I believe it is illegal to use wipers if it is not raining. If it's raining, back to it's dirty anyway...
