I was almost 45 before I got my first lift, a Greg Smith BP8000 two post that cost about $1200. Well worth the money. I installed it myself. Prior to that, I spent a lot of time on my back. As you age, getting under and out from under the car is a slower process. I still use jacks and jackstands if a car is disabled on the lift and I have to get another project done.

Quick jacks and a nice creeper would be a good option if you have very low ceilings or cannot install anything permanent.
