Hardly, Mr.5 was an extra hole with ducting to a dedicated filter that added much more cold air into N54 air box.

M2 lower airbox is the same as F30 N55 MPPK lower airbox ie big red hole directly behind LH headlight.

I tried F30 MPPK airbox on M135i with Jb4 and found it added nothing compared to std N55 airbox and a drop-in. I swapped back and installed an AFE DAS behind LH grille to help direct air into airbox, adding positive pressure to help flow thru an AFE dry drop filter panel. In mine and others have found DAS helps throttle response and even adds something to keeping IAT's in check. Great $50 mod for the sealed lower airbox
But that doesn't go without saying that the airbox could be there purely for sound. It wouldn't surprise me. I think my main point here is that your not going to see high/if any gains. As you pointed out.

If you have a Pure stage 2 or something similar that's a different story.
