I have never prefilled an oil filter and have performed all oil changes on a car I have driven daily for almost 30 years. I have never had bearing failures that were sufficient for me to notice. I believe the car I have has an engine built like a tank though as it has been through abuse, although it is stock. Also my oil filter is installed horizontally.
I am not sure what they prove by testing the oil from the drum and drained from the engine other than unused oil is cleaner than oil drained from an engine which should be obvious.
