For most cars, without a tire, RWD is always going to be at a disadvantage to AWD with similar power to weight. But with a tire, it shifts back to RWD because most AWD cars come with higher tread wear all round tires stock. They do better than RWD because they have the extra wheels giving traction. But with an R compound or DR - now the RWD car is cutting 60's at a level the AWD car cannot. Also for the simple reason a RWD can heat its tires.

At the highest level RWD cars are superior to AWD cars as the record ET's prove.
