Maybe back in 2001. The new M5 shares many elements from a standard 5-series. It's not only the frame as you make it seem.
What is shared? In the case of the M4, it shares almost nothing with the 435/440. Maybe a few interior controls, but not much more. The M5 may not follow the exact design philosophy, but likely quite close. Brakes, suspension, drivetrain, body panels, etc, etc are all M specific - although I think this time the V-8 has some commonality in structure, to your point. Not sure much else though?
