All of the above comments above are valid. When I take my 1-series in for service, I ask for "no wash," and I tape a note to the steering wheel. The one time I forgot, I had to polish out swirls later.
Also, I do think that all automotive paint is softer nowadays. Easier to get swirls, easier to pick up stone chips. I blame the water-based automotive paints mandated today.
Just like the porch floor and garage floor paint today is so inferior, thanks to the VOC regs.
I had fewer issues with this stuff twenty years or so ago.
