Your old pioneer beat them.

A lot of people come on here looking for features and nav and think they
will get better sound just throwing a head unit at it blindly .
But there is quality difference between a 200 to 300 dollar chinese unit
and some of the brands that were trusted in the past like Pioneer, Alpine,
Kenwood and JVC. Those will make the sound somewhat better but if
you still have the BMW speakers and amps (amp if you have one) maybe not so
much.
I would place the sound quality potential* of the Chinese units somewhere between stock and name brand aftermarket (Pioneer, Alpine etc.)
Thanks to Ali-323i I was able to change the sound processor on my Eonon and I find it markedly better than my OEM system (HiFi option 676). It's feeding the factory amplifier and speakers, so the only thing that's changed is the source. Overall I'm happy with it.
And I spent a fraction of what I would have on a Pioneer or Alpine setup.

*By "potential" I mean that out of the box, the Chinese units are not well setup for good sound. When I first installed it, my Eonon was too loud and delivered a fairly loud hiss on all sources (bluetooth, CD, Radio, etc). After tweaking the pre-amp and loudness settings with the new sound processor app it sounds quite nice.
