"E", "F" and "G" aren't really "generations". When the run out of one they moved to the next. It has worked out that (I think) all CLAR-based non-M models have been assigned a G letter, but I don't know if this was intentional. It looks like F8X and F9X were blocked out for M awhile back, and they still have some left. (Anyone in BMW R&D please feel free to correct me!)
