My manual also says "may" - this would be the case where you try to start the car before they have finished warming...

I think they are needed when it's about 5-10 degree's C...but that would only take a few (3ish) seconds. Below freezing, it could take up to 10 seconds.

It's all automated, if they are not warm enough - the car will delay it's start - so I don't even think about it :P
