There actually are glow plugs. They turn on as you unlock your doors (or open your doors if the car is unlocked). Because it only takes a few seconds for them to heat up - you don't even notice them working - and never have to wait for them.
To see what I mean - walk up to your locked car (after it has been standing - so like in the morning). As you unlock the car, you'll hear the doors unlock and the car making a noise. The car is pressurizing the fuel lines, starting the electronics, and warming the glowplugs...
It's very clever I say.
