I admit I would be skittish about removing this mechanism. I don't want to increase the chances of someone mis-fueling the vehicle. There are states in the USA (Oregon for one) where you cannot fuel your own vehicle. It wouldn't take much (a friend, one's spouse, a service station attendant, myself on a bad day) to put petrol in the tank.

Embarrassingly I admit to having done that once with a diesel rental in Italy, although in my defense the language and different color of nozzles contributed to my screw-up. Fortunately I caught it rather quickly.
