In the US it's a meaningful distinction because we have so many mechanically-locking 4WD pickups and SUVs here, and the guys who drive them are horrified by the notion of being dumped into the same category as a hair stylist who drives an A4. Those trucks, and that attitude, are much less common in most of the world.
