With respect to everyone...

Certainly don't tune your car before it's broken in. Personally, I wouldn't drop in any performance mods at all until the first service.

Break in matters. BMW states exactly how the car should be broken in and they don't just pull the info out of their ass. They do a tremendous amount of testing and document real differences in outcomes.

I've pulled apart many engines and it's easy to see which were broken in properly by looking at the wear patterns of various parts. Running too hard too soon creates unnecessary and undesirable wear on mated parts that will subsequently have a looser and/or improper fit.

This doesn't mean your car will explode if not broken in properly but not following break in procedure has certainly has caused problems up to and including total failure and is often the reason why a given engine may run better than the one next to it.
