That's ridiculous. I agree it's time to go to a new dealership.
Why the heck wouldn't he let you test drive the Z4? I'm currently test driving a number of cars (intend to buy a new car within the next year), and I've been to Acura, VW, BMW, Audi, Infinity, and MB dealerships so far. I walk in during my lunch hour without an appointment, ask to test drive the car I'm interested in, and they give me the keys. In a way, I've been a little surprised -- I've been half expecting some dealer to say "no, not without an appointment," but so far I've had no problems whatsoever. Every dealer has been great and low pressure. Plus, it's been a blast to test so many cars. Maybe if I asked for an Z4 or M5 or something they'd be more reluctant? I've been sticking around the $30-50K range.
Find a new dealer. There are good ones out there!
