What's not so great is the idrive/media. (As mine is a lease car it's basic spec, the only option i ticked was the sun protection glass.) ...it doesn't even play audio via iphone (bluetooth or usb)

If you don't have nav what screen do people leave the display on? BMW have not been very creative have they!

Unfortunately the iDrive really is that pointless without any of the advanced features.

I decided to buy a 32gb memory stick (amazingly for £12..!) and just copied a load of music on to it. Works a treat, just plug it in and forget about it until you need to update it with new music.
