I don't think you even need CarPlay for that. My phone is connected by Bluetooth without CarPlay. As long as I have Waze open on the phone it sends out audio notifications through the stereo.

If you have a route programmed and stop (let’s say for gas or rest), you’ll have to resume the route navigation from Waze afterwards. As people have mentioned above it doesn’t say much unless it’s navigating you.
