Why not get another 550xi and tune it? I've seen a 550i/xi pull on an M5 with just a JB4. The F10 V8s are not THAT far apart, when compared to the E60 550i vs M5 and E39 540i and M5 (aside from aesthetics.) Of course there is more to the car than just speed, but that's something that would really wear off for me pretty quickly considering the price difference vs performance difference.
I personally live in the Chicago area and opted for the RWD 550i. I came from a quattro Audi and it just wasn't as fun as a RWD car. All you really need is a very good winter set up, and you should be OK.
