For me, if I'm removing the front left wheel, I will place the jack under the front left mount. Once it's high enough, I'll put a jack stand under the rear left mount and then lower the vehicle onto the jack stand so there's weight on both the jack and the jack stand.
Removing the rear left wheel? I'll do the opposite.
