My dad had a prior M5 circa 1996 (I think it was '95 model) and he bought a spare from the dealer who assured him it was the correct RIM/Tire combination. We were heading to my wedding outside of Toronto from the Boston area and got a flat up in Canada. The spare DID NOT FIT. Luckily there was a BMW dealer near by and they had a tire for his car. After that we both buy spares AND TEST FIT THEM, for all our cars. I had a spare for my M2 also. I sold that spare for what I paid for it. LOL. He had the M Coupe back in the day and had a spare for that which took up the entire back LOL, but never got stuck again.
