This seems to be true. In my old car, just having the app running enabled alerts but it did not have Apple CarPlay. I wonder if its an Apple CarPlay/Waze compatibility issue. This is from the Waze site...."Waze on CarPlay is a limited version of the app. Some features might not be available".
