My lease on my M4 is up May 2018 so I am in a similar situation as you. My dealer said I could extend my lease until the M5 arrived... not sure how that would work but you could ask about extending your current lease...
I was actually first on the list at my dealer and had the allocation in hand (I was put on the list a year ago), I passed because I'm not sold on the M5. Will I regret that? Maybe. But now I'm leaning towards an used 2017 R8, or a 991.2 Turbo, or 991 GT3. I'm still wishy washy and could return to the M5..but I lost my allocation spot.

Thanks for the information; I too gave up my allocation as I was and still am on the fence about what I’ll do next.
