I've done both. The M does fine in the winter with a good set of tires, but after driving it briefly for the first winter I had it, I just couldn't take all the chips and road rash that were starting to build up.
My vote is to go for the beater and store the M for the winter, then when the weather gets nice again sell the beater. That's what I did last winter and that's what I plan on doing this year.
