another method to remove shift knob
I tried another method after struggling unsuccessfully to get the knob off while sitting in the front seats. I opened the moonroof and then straddled the console and wrapped my hands around the knob from above while squatting over it with my head sticking out of the roof opening. Then it was easy to pull the knob off, like pulling up a tent stake. Leg are a lot stronger for pulling than arms alone.
