I think it is about time BMW had a 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder. The Audi/VW unit has been fantastic throughout the range, in variations of tune (See Golf R).

I/m obviously biased, my wife and I bought one, however I think looking purely at the peak figures for a small motor like this is selling it short. The VW 2.0T has such a breadth of talent, and 'eager at any rev' demeanour that you always feel you have the pep and grunt to get you where and when you need to go.

I don't expect any less from the BMW unit, and knowing BMW all competitive models will be faster than the audi offerings. In North America where we don't have half the engine selection of our European friends, this is the kind of motor that can far exceed the expectations of the masses, please the hooligan enthusiasts among us, and return ridiculously good milage to everyone.

A fantastic 335i "lite" is likely just around the corner.
