I don't think "firearm" is an ATF classification. Rife, pistol, SBR, AOW, machine gun.....those are atf classifications.
I'm 95% sure the shockwave is classified by the ATF as an AOW (any other weapon). |

Lucky for us, the ATF has clarified this one too! See my earlier post about the ATF ruling on pistol braces as well. But you're right, it's confusing and could probably be brought against you if they really really want to.
