As stated by drew, it doesn't matter of your battery is on a charger.
You can turn it off by turning the headlight knob to the 12 o'clock position, straight up.
For map flashing after MHD has been initially installed, you should turn ac, off, and headlights off completely as above. This usually takes about 2 mins max and does not need a charger.
